Physical Education
The physical education program at Austin Middle School focuses on three domains: cognitive, psychomotor, and affective. The cognitive domain shows the knowledge gained through instruction. The psychomotor domain shows the transfer of knowledge into movement. The affective domain shows the attitude or feeling of an individual during and after instruction. These domains embody aspects of health, fitness, and nutrition through the introduction of team and lifetime recreational sports. The students are also given a brief exposure to social dancing. Students are encouraged to set individual goals for improving their physical fitness and are provided time during each class to participate in strength building activities for upper body strength, abdominal strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance in order to reach their goals. Students in fifth through seventh grade participate in physical education at least every other day throughout the school year.
